Fall Events and Activities Near Nellysford

Fall is a perfect time to plan a getaway. As the weather changes and things cool off, the mountains start their dazzling display of colors. The area comes alive with activities, many of them outdoors. Grab a light jacket for the cooler evenings and fill your vacation with music, the arts, and a little silly fun.

Sip wine while listening to live music at Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery. Every Sunday until October 10 the winery presents musicians on the deck from 2pm until 5pm. Enjoy the autumn sun while sampling a chardonnay, cabernet franc, or maybe their Rockfish Red.

If you like live music but prefer beer, Blue Mountain Brewery has live music on Friday evenings through October. They are also throwing a party on December 5 to celebrate the release of Concealed Darkness which is a special reserve version of the Dark Hollow Imperial Stout. The festivities will include live music, a whole pig roast, and special beer tappings.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be live and outdoors as presented by Wintergreen Resort and Wayne Theater. The magical story features lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Shows start on September 9 and continue through October 3 with performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings along with two matinees on the weekend.

Watch a movie under the stars at Bold Rock Hard Cider. Movies start at sundown and are free to attend. Some of the films featured this fall include The Big Lebowski, Jaws, and The Goonies. Grab a cider and food from Bold Bites Food Truck and settle in for the show.

The Blue Ridge Mountain Maze has 20 years of experience in creating a dynamic family-friendly event. This year the Fall Festival Opening Day is Saturday, September 25. The night maze is open Fridays and Saturdays from October 1 through November 6. While you are there visit with the farm animals and choose a pumpkin to bring home with you.

Infinity Downs Farm in Arrington is hosting Overland Expo East 2021. The three-day event is one of the world’s largest educational and inspirational opportunities for do-it-yourself adventure travel enthusiasts. There are training sessions, expert presenters, and 150+ classes along with a professional trade show. The expo will be held October 8-10.

Go apple picking at Drumheller’s Orchard. There is nothing like the freshness of an apple right after it has been plucked from a tree. Pick your own hours are available Tuesday through Sunday. You can also stop in to grab some already picked produce from the farm market. Check their Facebook page for up-to-date fruit availability. The Saunders Brothers Farm Market has peaches through the end of September, pears through October, and Apples until they close in December.

Speaking of apples, Bryant’s Cider is ready for their second annual Apple Butter Festival and Cider Week on November 20. Savor fresh apple butter, delicious cider, and tasting BBQ. Their brut ciders are sugar free, gluten free, and naturally carbonated.

The Fall Fiber Festival and Montpelier Sheep Dog Trials is scheduled for October 2 and 3. The family friendly event features shearing and fiber arts demonstrations, animal exhibits, and classes for all ages. Perhaps you are creative enough to enter the art or skein and garment competitions. This festival began in 1988 and has been popular ever since.
